Google event listings

Tourism Operators - Business Listings

Having an event loaded into google provides your event with the opportunity of being highly profiled in a ‘whats on’ search.

As you can see on this screen, there are several events highly profiled on the google search ‘Whats on north Brisbane’. If I was a tourist staying at Redcliffe, I’d be looking to search google for ‘Whats on Redcliffe’.

How to create an Google event listing

So how do you get your events included in this list?

There are a couple of ways to get your events noticed by google.

1. If you’re using a third-party website to post your events, such as ticketing websites or social media platforms, your event publisher may already be participating in the event search experience. Downside it is hard to find information on what platforms have this integration with google.

2. If you’re using a content management system (CMS) like WordPress, there are plugins that can be added to automate this for you. Alternatively you can make use of the Data Highlighter to alert Google to the events. Downside, all of this requires technical skill or budget to contract someone to action for you. There is also the maintenance side, with security version updates, specifically for wordpress websites.

3. Easiest option for businesses, post directly into your Google My Business listing, this is the business listing that displays on Google Maps. Today I am going to show you 3 easy steps to do this:

Step 1. Google your business

Step 2. Click on the ‘promote’ button

Step 3. Select ‘add an event’

Fill in all the details, remembering to add images. Once complete click publish and your done!

NO BUSINESS LISTING

If you don’t currently have a google my business listing, you need to check google maps to see if your business is listed, but unclaimed. If this is the case, you need to claim that business listing. Here is an example.

If there is no business listing currently in Google Maps, you need to set one up from scratch. This is easy following the steps on the visit the google.com/business/ website.

NOT A PHYSICAL LOCATION

If you are delivering an event, that is not connected with a physical business, such as a music festival in a park, you will need to explore the first 2 options of upload onto google as outlined at the start of this how to guide.
